"Nishikigi" : Original mask by Shokei

Comment This mask is based on a copy of the "Ko-Omote", and was created based on the image of a Tsure (village woman) who is unable to accept the love of a man (Awa-otoko) in the Noh play "Nishikigi". The man (Awa-otoko) continues the custom of setting up a nishikigi (if the woman accepts, her love will be granted) for three years, but is not accepted. The woman and the man, who has taken the form of a vengeful spirit, re-enact the past to repent---the woman weaves a loom and the man sets up the nishikigi outside, but is not accepted, and after three years, both the nishikigi and the man's body decay.
